The Sanford Housing Authority Board member who was charged Jan. 14 with domestic assault has resigned his post amid questions about his residency, the Rant has learned.

Dedrick Petty, 31, had been charged with assault on a female, although a person claiming to be the victim told the Sanford Herald (subscription required) that she expected the charges to be dropped. Petty was appointed to the board, which oversees federal public and Section 8 housing in Sanford and Lee County, in 2015. The position is unpaid.

The arrest brought to light the fact that Petty now lives in Apex. Board members are required to live in the Sanford city limits. Petty’s resignation means the Sanford City Council will have to appoint a replacement.

The board was apparently informed at its Monday meeting that Petty, who had served as vice chairman, had tendered his resignation. Board member Jesse Coyle was voted in as the new vice chairman.

SHA Executive Director Shannon McLean did not return a call seeking comment.
