Sanford has been named by a leading personal finance outlet as one of the best small cities in America in which to start a business., a Washington, D.C.-based website which offers a variety of free personal finance tools, ranked Sanford 15th out of more than 1,200 in a recent study looking at factors such as human resource availability (446th), office space affordability (69th), labor costs (289th), and cost of living index (118th).

Holland, Michigan topped the list, and two other North Carolina cities finished ahead of Sanford (Wilson, NC was fourth, and Salisbury, NC was 13th). While we don’t have any hard numbers on business growth locally, anecdotal evidence at the very least bears out the study’s conclusion about Sanford. A number of new businesses have opened or announced plans to open in the past two years, and both city government and private developers have begun look at revitalization efforts at various blighted properties around town.

According to the study, the worst small city in the country for starting a new business is Suisun City, California, which came in at 1261st place. Great Scott, we’re lucky to not be Suisun City.
