School board votes to investigate Womack’s actions in D.C.; community speaks out

Update: Toward the end of Tuesday night’s meeting, board member Sherry Lynn Womack responded to the vote to investigate her involvement in the pro-Trump rally in Washington, D.C., on Jan. 6. Her statement: 

“Last I checked, this is a free country. And I have a constitutionally protected right to assemble and express my concerns in public places. My service to the Lee County Board of Education is not conditioned on me waiving those rights. I also realize that as an elected official, my actions are constantly being scrutinized. So it comes as no surprise there are some who will be critical of my participation in the rally at the capital last Wednesday. That is their prerogative.

“I do not regret traveling by bus to Washington, D.C., in support of my president. I joined over a million other patriots who were there to celebrate President Trump’s many accomplishments and to show my support for him in this difficult time, for many have questioned the legitimacy of this election. I did not participate in any violent activities, nor do I condone the behaviors of some protestors who swarmed into the Capitol. I condemn all actions of violence and threats to government officials that took place. And I would highly recommend all board members actually read our policy code 2220 before they make the decision to waste tax dollars to hire an attorney to look into something that is completely false.”

The Lee County Board of Education voted 5-2 Tuesday night to investigate board member Sherry Lynn Womack’s involvement in a rally for President Trump in Washington, D.C., on Jan. 6 that culminated with the violent siege of the Capitol building. 

More than 50 statements from members of the community and even Lee County students condemning Womack’s presence at the rally were read aloud by Superintendent Andy Bryan before board member Pat McCracken offered a motion authorizing school attorney Jimmy Love to lead the investigation. The motion passed 5-2 with Republicans Sandra Bowen and Christine Hilliard voting in favor and Pam Sutton and Womack herself voting against.

Womack and Sutton were the only two board members not physically present at Tuesday’s meeting, both attending via Zoom. And Womack did not offer a statement about the vote (as of 9 p.m. Tuesday), aside from saying “absolutely not” when voting for the investigation. 

The vote stems from Womack and her husband Jim’s presence in the nation’s capital on Jan. 6. Sherry Lynn was quoted in an article by the USA Today that day saying she traveled to Washington to “demand better election security and stronger voter ID laws,” citing what she believed to be “suspicious” videos of ballot counting in Georgia.  

“I’m not one of those conspiracy theorists,” she told USA Today. “But these are legitimate questions that need to be asked.”

Womack is not believed to have entered the Capitol when hundreds of Trump supporters stormed its halls hours later. But several of the public statements read Tuesday night were critical of her identifying herself as a member of the Lee County Board of Education in the article. 

Brenda Johnson and Vonda Reives of Sanford said in a joint statement that they believed Womack violated the board’s Policy Code 2220, which states any person speaking in an official capacity should do so “from the standpoint of the best interests of the school district [and] not as a representative of his or her own personal ideas or feelings.” 

“Sherry Lynn Womack pursued to speak to the media … and presented questions that were already discounted by many sources,” Johnson and Reives wrote, “and her personal actions to represent herself as a board of education member in the aftermath of this violent riot is despicable.” 

Jayden Marshall, a Lee County High School student, said he doesn’t want someone who “represents hate” on the school board. 

“Mrs. Womack should also act as a leader and should not be attending an event that is going against CDC [guidelines] and coming back home to spread the virus,” Marshall wrote. “She posted pictures on her personal social media account at the event, and she was not wearing any personal protection gear.” 

LCHS junior Alyssa Martin said she was “extremely disgusted” by Womack’s presence in D.C.

“Her participation … was a clear representation of a leader who stands for hatred, oppression against minorities and a symbol of racism — meaning she shares the same ideology and values as the riot symbolized,” Martin wrote. “I demand her immediate resignation from the Lee County Board of Education, because the actions she has taken makes me feel unsafe.”

The majority of the comments concerning Womack asked for her resignation or removal from the board. A few were in support of her. 

“I am dismayed that you are crucifying a board member for their political beliefs,” wrote Cindi McGee. “Cancel culture is socialist and not what Lee County Schools should be setting as an example for their students. They should be taught that bullying is wrong. You are currently the biggest bullies in the room. Shame on you and your attempts to silence diversity of thought.”

Of the public statements read Tuesday, more than half were about Womack and the rest were concerning COVID-19 guidelines and for and against statements for Lee County Schools to transition to more in-person classes.

  3. It’s a sad day when even a representative can’t have her own personal, political opinions and show support for a particular candidate. Our 1st amendment rights are definitely in peril here. I, for one, have received more hatred, racist, and derogatory remarks from those opposing Trump than from anyone else.

  4. The second she identified herself as a county schol board member she began to speak in an official capacity, and there lies the problem. Had she done it as a Lee County resident then she wouldn’t be in this predicament. She should go!

  7. It is truly a sad day in our republic when people’s rights, have been and are being restricted by those that don’t agree.

    1st amendment clearly states:
    “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press, or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.”

    Nowhere does it state unless you hold public office.

Do you really want a race-baiting seditionist – who traveled hundreds of miles to participate in a violent demonstration to disrupt the US election process because she saw some “suspicious” videos of alleged (and unproven in a court of law) voter fraud online – influencing your children’s education? She knew full well there would be violence as was widely reported in social media prior to the event. What part did she really play? If she is innocent of wrong-doing, I wonder why she scrubbed her Twitter account of inflammatory tweets? She knew exactly what she was doing while proudly brandishing to national media that she was a Lee County elected official. Will Lee County wait until this person shows up on an FBI wanted poster to take action? Like many, I’m tired of the unfettered arrogance of people who call themselves “patriots” while they conduct themselves like anything but. Then they cry like babies when they’re called out on it. Enough is enough: Resign or Recall!

  10. The attack on Womack is unwarranted. She was speaking out for a warranted injustice along with thousands of others during a peaceful protest when a few left the peaceful protest for lesser conduct. To even consider investigating this upstanding member of our community is an attack on every person who has ever stood up for what they believe. The attack is censorship. The attack is a communist tactic to further the New World Order groupthink. It is abominable.
    The attack on Womack is an epic fail in the board’s support for fairness – a board who supported the BLM riots (which burned cities to the ground and created a racial war) and brought the BLM movement into our classrooms to further spread the racial war.
    I am deeply disappointed in our school board, but not Womack.
    The Washington Examiner reported on Dec. 1, 2020 that not only does mail-in voting invite fraud, it is embraced. In its findings during one period of investigation it found: Postal subcontractor Jesse Morgan on Oct. 21 moved 144,000-288,000 completed mail-in ballots from Bethpage, New York, to Lancaster, Pennsylvania, where his trailer holding the ballots disappears.
    Postal subcontractor Nathan Pease is told by two separate postal workers on two separate occasions that the USPS in Wisconsin was gathering over 100,000 ballots on the morning of Nov. 4 to backdate the ballots so that the ballots would be counted even if they arrived after the statutory deadline.
    Computer expert Gregory Stenstrom of Pennsylvania witnessed a vendor of Dominion machines and local election officials download and update counting machines in violation of election system protocol and the comingling of machine jump drives in violation of election protocols and rendering audits impossible without direct forensic access to the machines.
    Postal workers in Traverse City, Michigan; Coraopolis, Pennsylvania; Erie, Pennsylvania; and Elkins Park, Pennsylvania, indicate widespread malfeasance in the Postal Service including backdating ballots, ordering that Trump mail be interdicted to be placed in the ‘Undeliverable Bulk Business Mail’ bin, and emphasizing that Biden mail be delivered on time.
    The Jan. 6 2021 peaceful protest was in fact warranted.
    Until America uses personal identification to vote, results will be nothing less than rigged.
    Support Womack or lose our support.

    I am appalled by the Communist actions of the Lee County school board. America is a FREE nation and she had every right to attend the Stop the Steal rally. I went to the DC rally and saw only patriot Americans exercising our God given rights as free people. There are legitimate questions regarding election integrity that should be answered and the American people deserve answers. For those that do not agree that is your right but going after someone that does not agree is wrong. That is what is going on here…….shame on you!!

  14. A big shout out to former representative Mike Stone Republican from Sanford who in 2013 change the laws in North Carolina to allow the school board amongst other boards to become Pardison I hope you’re happy….
    Look at the mess were in now it’s not about the students or the teachers God bless our teachers it’s about being a democrat and a republican now…. clearly shown last night as one could hear snickering from various school board members when discussions were going on….
    Can anyone act like an adult and represent our community for our children and our teachers sake, instead of a 10th grade high school little girl who just got her way…..
    Much love to our teachers and administrators who are continually asked to do more and more with less and less available….
    And the only ones who lose our our children….

  15. Whether or not you agree with Mrs. Womack’s political ideas is irrelevant. The issue is that she appears to have violated Policy Code 2220 by identifying herself to the press as a Lee County elected school board official while expressing her personal views at what devolved into a deadly political event.
    The fact that she violated DC mask mandates then returned to Lee County, and subsequently didn’t recuse herself from the vote shows further questionable judgement.

  18. When you are elected to a local board and when you have a leadership role on that board, you do indeed lose your right to express your opinions unless you are so stupid as to not understand that as an elected person you represent your community when you are at events like that.

    If you don’t understand that kind of “statesmanship” you don’t understand the job.

    For instance can you imagine someone from the UNC Board of Governors, CCCC Board, or Board of Trustees at NC State or UNC showing up at a cluster like then and worse yet identifying themselves and tying their organization to that cluster? If you want to be a private person that’s great, but once you become a public person you are a different creature.mberp

I still have a problem like so many others both Democrats & Republicans that seem to agree and has been debated in the courts – Why is it such a problem to require people to show a ID when they vote – its really a no brainer – The election is this date and this is the date that u vote with proper ID and the results are made public shortly there after ……

    I would prefer better yet if you don’t own Real Estate with an Id u can’t vote anyway !

  22. Many of us have employment contracts with national companies that restrict us from naming our company in an interview. The purpose is to not to be mis-identified as a representative for our companies. We can be fired if we do.
    Sherry was identified as a Lee County School Board Member in her interview. So it could be construed that her statements spoke for Lee County Schools.
    Jimmy Love needs to determine if she volunteered this information, or did the reporter “Google” her and added it after the fact.

Good Evening – Saw Sanford Herald this evening – I’m still trying to figure out the problem I see here on this forum about Sherry Womack going to Washington DC in support of Donald Trump our president .I’ve never met the lady I have no children in Lee County Schools – But feel she had the right to use her money & time to travel to DC to show her support of the current president Donald Trump ……

    I’m impressed with the fact she not shy to express herself and voice her opinions be it you agree with her or not ……

  24. I follow City Council / Lee County Commissioner Races but have never paid much attention to Board of Education Races ( no children ) was curious this evening tho .

    I just GOOGLED UP the Top Vote Getter for last election and was in fact Sherry Womack – Seems somebody likes and supports this lady – maybe that better explains the reason the persons speaking out against Sherry Womack dont put their name to their post / hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm………..Just my thoughts and mine alone !

    I think what most critics are actually indicating is that they think Ms. Womack is not intellectually up to representing Lee County in a positive manner and that her associating with criminals, which many in that crowd are and will be convicted of in the future, is a confirmation of that..

    Instead of defending HER rights to do anything she desires, she could have defended the responsibilities of participation in the Republic.

    I don’t trust people who are always clamoring about their rights while ignoring the needs of those around them. Not one school child in Lee County is helped and not one potential employer is persuaded to relocate to an area where “crazies” hold elective office. By being id as from Lee County and on the BOE, she has jumped in with the “crazies” intentionally or not.

    You have every right to hold any belief you want, but when the ill-thought expression of your beliefs begin to hurt innocent people, even in an indirect manner, you should pause to think about those actions.

    I’ll say this, Jesus would not have attended such a rally, not have participated in the various plots to kill elected people and security people, nor would he have held a rally to encourage others to take a path of violence.

    When personal freedom is pushed to the point of being both un-Christian and un-American – that’s an abuse on the rest of us.

      Something tells me that you have never been a fan of President Trump – nor did u vote for him in 2016 or this past election .But to state as you did that all that showed up @ the Capitol on Jan 6 to show their support of President as a bunch of “crazies” and that Jesus would not of showed up at such a rally is a bit of a stretch to say the least ……

      I think we all would agree the rioting at Capitol was 
      

      despicable and sickening and was the work of a few extremists

      rather than the true rank and file Trump Supporters that showed

      up in large numbers from all walks of life from across the nation .

      I would like to think Sherry Womack was one of those supporters –

      Would also like to believe her comments were spoken to USA

      reporter prior to the violence that erupted later – I don’t know that

      to be a fact because I have not spoken to Mrs. Womack nor have

      I ever met the lady but she did get my vote past election .
