Repairs at the Fastee Mart, 3209 Lee Avenue, were already under way on Monday morning after a man crashed into the front of the store just after midnight. The driver was later killed in a head on collision during a police chase.

A Raleigh man suspected of driving his car into a convenience store was killed in a head-on wreck on U.S. Highway 1 as police chased him early Monday morning.

Sanford police responded to the Fastee Mart at 3209 Lee Ave. around 12:30 a.m. in response to an alarm activation and found “extensive damage to the front of the business.”

The driver of a 2012 Jeep Patriot which had crashed into the store, later identified as 56-year-old Scott Reid of Raleigh, was apparently inside the building stealing property when officers arrived. Reid is reported to have gotten in his vehicle and fled while police attempted to stop him.

Reid led officers on a chase which ended on U.S. 1 near Wicker Street, where he was driving north in the southbound lane and crashed head-on into another vehicle.

Reid died at the scene of the crash, and the occupants of the other vehicle were treated for non life threatening injuries, one at Central Carolina Hospital in Sanford and the other at UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill.
