Sanford has been ranked at the ninth-best retirement destination in North Carolina by movoto.com, a national Real Estate website. The site noted Sanford’s overall weather and air quality as its primary draws.

“How could Sanford climb this list?” the story asks. “The locale did the poorest in our amenities criterion. In this instance, this city in Lee County brought home a No. 55 rank. While not the lowest on our list, there is certainly room for improvement.”

A $14.5 million bond package approved by city voters in November for downtown renovation, streetscapes, greenway expansion and recreation facilities could address the lack of amenities the site notes.

Sanford ranked just ahead of Matthews, a Charlotte suburb, on the list. Morrisville, Mount Holly, and Apex took the top three spots, respectively. The list also notes that Rocky Mount, Reidsville, Hendersonville, Burlington, and Winston-Salem are “the worst places to retire” in North Carolina.
