Among the mass of chain restaurants and retail stores coming to the Shops of Cameron Place is a locally owned eatery that will provide a different take on Mexican food.

Aye! Toro Fire Grill and Cantina is eyeing a July opening, according to Antonio Colin of Sanford, a partner in the new business. Colin, a manager at the San Felipe Mexican restaurant on Horner Boulevard in Sanford, says Aye! Toro will have a different menu — a “new concept” — with items like sweet tamales, coconut shrimp and a Mexico City hamburger, among others.

“We’re trying to give Sanford something new … another option,” Colin said. “We’re still working on the menu, but it will look much different than San Felipe.”

The shopping center has boomed in the four years since an F2 tornado tore a path through the then-wooded area en route to pummeling the Lowe’s Home Improvement store across the highway. Hobby Lobby, Rack Room Shoes, Petco and Marshalls have opened in the past few months, while Ross Dress for Less is coming soon. Buffalo Wild Wings and Mattress Firm are among the businesses currently under construction.

“It’s a popular area, and I’m excited about it,” Colin said. “We’re all creating new jobs for Sanford and making it a bigger, better place.”
