Pinehurst Resort proved it could handle back-to-back U.S. Opens in 2014. Now it’s ready for another big national tournament.
The Resort and Country Club announced this week it will host the 2019 U.S. Amateur Championship on Aug. 12-18, 2019. It will mark Pinehurst’s third U.S. Amateur — Labron Harris Jr. won it in 1962 and Danny Lee won back in 2008.
The tournament is your best chance to get up close to golf’s biggest names before they become stars. Consider the past U.S> Amateur champions — Bobby Jones, Jack Nicklaus, Phil Mickelson, Tiger Woods (three in a row). When Lee won it at Pinehurst, he became the youngest-ever champion at age 18 and a month (six months younger than Tiger when he won it in 1994). A 17-year-old, An Byeong-hun, beat Lee’s mark the following year.
Pinehurst No. 2 is the only course to have hosted all five of the USGA’s most important events: U.S. Open (1999, 2005, 2014), U.S. Women’s Open (2014), U.S. Amateur (1962, 2008, 2019), U.S. Women’s Amateur (1989) and U.S. Senior Open (1994).
