Lee County Attorney Kerry Self has tendered her resignation to the Lee County Board of Commissioners effective April 1, the Rant has learned. The decision was announced after a closed session at Tuesday night’s meeting.
Self was hired in 2012 to replace recently-deceased former County Attorney Dale Talbert, but did not officially become licensed to practice law in North Carolina until May of 2014.
During the interim, Fayetteville attorney Neil Yarborough represented the county on legal matters. Yarborough has remained on retainer since, advising the county in matters ranging from a lawsuit over open meeting laws to hearings about a proposed quarry near the Carolina Trace subdivision.
I never understood hiring this lady. With all the law schools pumping out lawyers in North Carolina you would have to think there were more qualified or just as qualified people from North Carolina that would have taken the job. Lee County wasted a good bit of money on this hire due to Attorney Self having to wait so long to get approved to practice law in North Carolina while getting paid as if she was a practicing attorney. Something never smelled right with that hire.
