Two young men were arrested today in an hit-and-run that killed two Broadway-area teens and injured a third in January 2016, WWGP’s Margaret Murchison reported.
Investigators from the State Highway Patrol and the Harnett County Sheriff’s Office announced the arrest of Davis Christian Stewart, 21, of Lillington and Donald Conrad Crounse, 20, of Raleigh after a 15-month search that included a large billboard on U.S. 421 (near the site) to assist in the search for leads.
The two have been charged in killing Jennifer Schark, 13, and Kyle Strait, 16, both of Broadway and injuring 14-year-old Steven Daniels of Sanford. Schark was a student at Western Harnett Middle School, while Strait and Daniels were students at Western Harnett High School. According to the Dunn Daily Record, the trio was walking south near McNeill Road after visiting the nearby convenience store when they were hit by a white truck. The driver immediately left the scene after the accident.
The Daily Record reports Stewart is in custody in California, where he is currently stationed in the Marines. He is awaiting extradition to North Carolina to face charges — as the alleged driver — of two counts felony hit-and-run causing death or serious bodily injury, one count of felony hit-and-run causing injury, altering evidence, conspiracy to alter evidence, obstructing justice and conspiracy to obstruct justice.
