U.S. Rep. Mark Walker, who represents Lee County in Congress, has announced a series of town hall events, including one in Sanford set for Tuesday, May 30.

The event will be held from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m., which is right in the middle of the day.

Citing “limited capacity” at the venue – the city of Sanford’s Public Works Department at 601 N. 5th St., which seems like a strange place to have a town hall – Walker’s office is requiring that people sign up in advance to attend (you can do so at the link above) and stating that members of the public are allowed to attend only one of the events. Signs are not permitted. As of this writing, 84 tickets remain for the Sanford event.

Walker will hold three other events that day, one each in Rockingham County, Alamance County and Randolph County.

First elected to Congress in 2014, Walker’s 6th District was redrawn to include Lee County in 2016. After winning re-election that year, he was elected the leader of the Republican Study Committee, which Wikipedia described as “a faction of highly conservative Republicans.”

Since earlier in the spring, several members of Congress have faced angry crowds at town halls. While some Republicans have dismissed those angry crowds as being made up of “liberal activists,” much of the anger appears to be centered around the introduction of the American Health Care Act, which passed the House passed earlier in May and is now in the Senate. Walker voted for its passage.

Walker met with local leaders in April (subscription required), and praised Sanford as being “on the precipice of some major things.” He also praised the area’s “bi-partisan working arrangements.”
