A 14-year-old boy died on Sunday after striking a tree while riding an all-terrain vehicle, the Rant has learned.

Ammons Farm Road runs roughly parallel to U.S. 1 in northern Lee County, ending near the Raleigh Executive Jetport.

North Carolina state troopers didn’t release the boy’s name, citing his age, but said he was riding four wheelers with a group of friends when he ran off the right side of Ammons Farm Road in northern Lee County and struck a tree.

The wreck occurred at 12:20 p.m. on Sunday. The child was taken by helicopter to UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill, where he later died.

ATV regulations in North Carolina are varied – depending on engine sizes, restrictions are in place for children under 8, 12 and 16 years of age – and it is unknown what type of vehicle the child was driving. It is illegal to ride ATVs on public streets like Ammons Farm Road.
