Helms

Sheriff’s deputies in Lee County have accused a 20-year-old woman of dumping the body of an overdose victim who later died.

Destiny Nicole Helms made her first appearance today in Lee County Superior Court, WRAL reports. Helms was charged with felony concealment of death after she allegedly dropped Corey Michael Clark, 27, off on Pumping Station Road after he reportedly suffered a drug overdose. Deputies found his body early Tuesday morning.

The charge carries a mandatory active prison sentence if found guilty.

According to the WRAL report, Helms “arrived at a friend’s house around 12:30 a.m. and told the friend that Clark had overdosed in her car. Officials say the friend knew Clark, and the house was less than five minutes from where his body was found.”

Former Superior Court Judge Frank Lanier was appointed to represent Helms, who was held on $75,000 secured bond.
