Exercise trail at Kiwanis Park in Sanford

Lee County Government announced today that Kiwanis Family Park on Wicker Street and SanLee Park are still closed today because of storm damage. Both parks suffered significant storm damage from high winds and flooding. SanLee’s nature center is also closed.

“All of the hiking and bike trails at Kiwanis Family Park and SanLee Park suffered some damage from the storm,” John Payne, director of Parks and Recreation for the county, said in a press release today. “Before we re-open the parks, we need to ensure the trails are clear and safe for use and also confirm that all of our facilities and structures are safe for use.”

In addition to the flooding, the footbridge that spans the creek to allow park-goers access to the playground and open field at SanLee Park was destroyed in the storm. The nature center did not suffer any structural damage from the storm, but it will remain closed as other areas of the park are cleared and maintained.

The county staff hope the parks will re-open, at least in part, by this weekend.

The county has received inquiries from the public about volunteer opportunities. Those interested should contact Lora Kelly at (919) 775-2107 xtn. 4202 or lora.kelley@leecountync.gov.
