We don’t have much to add to the headline, but here’s some sad news if Yamato was your favorite place for Japanese food in Sanford: the restaurant at 2610 S. Horner Blvd., which had been serving hibachi meals and (occasional) sushi has shut its doors.
We’d heard reports about the closing through the grapevine, but a sign on the door and other sources (in addition to the overgrown landscaping in the parking area) confirm the place has served its last plate of Yaki steak.
Despite there being other restaurants with the same name, Yamato isn’t a chain restaurant as we understand it. But the closing is the second in as many months for Sanford. Sagebrush Steakhouse – that one’s a chain – shut down without any warning in June.
There’s no telling whether any other eateries are lining up to fill the space, but the Yamato building had been a Fazoli’s back in the 1990s, so it’s at least theoretically possible that something else could work in the location.

So sad to see them go!!
Haven’t been there in years. When a roach ran across our table, that was it for me.
Yamato was undoubtedly our favorite restaurant in Sanford.
It was a shell of its former self.
Is Sanford dying? I can never tell. Yamatos is gone. Plenty of stores in Riverbirch have shut down. The interior of the only movie theater in
I don’t think Sanford is dying…just people have more options and bigger cities have better quality food. I have lived in Sanford for almost 40 years and Sanford has always been a difficult place to have a successful restaurant. It says a lot for the ones that have made it.
Good. Last experience i had there was very telling of the quality of the staff. 30 minutes to take our order, then a large party comes in and they tell us our order is delayed so they can get the party done first. Raised concerns to the teenage/early 20s night manager for her to “Actually, sir…” Me.
Nah. Glad to see it shut down.
Seems to be an unfortunate trend here in Sanford and I think its only going to continue. On the upside, maybe we’ll get a couple of more mattress stores vape shops…ā¦.
