City police arrested two men Tuesday afternoon on suspicion of firing shots at another man outside the Lee County Library on Hawkins Avenue in downtown Sanford earlier that morning.

Matthew Dillon Smith, 21, of Murrells Inlet, S.C., and Decarus Ortego McLean, 30, of 4806 N. Pointe Drive in Sanford were arrested after officers found them in a vehicle on Chisholm Street near Hawkins Avenue.

According to the Sanford Police Department, 19-year-old Kenneth McIntyre reported around 10:30 a.m. that someone had fired shots at him from a blue Chevy Malibu while he was in the parking lot of the library at 107 Hawkins Ave. McIntyre was not hit and there weren’t any reports of damage to property.

Smith faces charges of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill and discharging a firearm inside the city limits. He was placed in the Lee County Jail under $20,000 secured bond. McLean is charged with accessory after the fact to assault with a deadly weapon and also received a $20,000 secured bond.
