A Sanford man is in stable condition at UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill after sustaining multiple gunshot wounds while riding in a vehicle on North Horner Boulevard, city police reported Wednesday.
Steven Wadell, 25, was riding Tuesday afternoon in the passenger seat of a vehicle heading north on Horner Boulevard near the intersection with U.S. 1 when someone shot him multiple times, a press release from the Sanford Police Department indicates. Wadell and the vehicle’s other occupants left the scene and went to Central Carolina Hospital for treatment before officers arrived.
Wadell’s wounds were to his arm, side and leg, police said. He was ultimately transferred to Chapel Hill for treatment.
According to a report in Wednesday’s Sanford Herald that doesn’t appear to be published on the newspaper’s website, a witness reported hearing gunfire and seeing a vehicle crashed near the intersection in question. The witness told The Herald that three men got out of the vehicle, a burgundy SUV, and get into another vehicle before driving away. A different witness told the paper a third vehicle was seeing fleeing north.
City police have said the incident is under investigation, and anyone with information if asked to contact the department at (919) 777-1051.
