UPDATE: Via its Facebook page, HAVEN has issued a statement indicating that the organization’s leadership believes the money was taken “by a former staff member.”
ORIGINAL STORY: HAVEN in Lee County, a nonprofit which advocates for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault, reported in June that someone had embezzled funds from the organization in late 2019.
A report filed on June 29 with the Sanford Police Department indicates that the organization is missing $10,989.27, which was “last known secure” in October of 2019.
In some other recent cases of embezzlement from nonprofits, Sanford police have handed the investigation over to the State Bureau of Investigation. But Major Vinnie Frazer of the Sanford Police Department said Wednesday that the department was leading the investigation in HAVEN’s case.
