Republicans Sandra Bowen and Christine Hilliard were elected chair and vice chair of the Lee County Board of Education at a meeting Tuesday night.

Bowen, who served on the board from 2014 to 2018, was elected again in November. Hilliard won her seat in 2018.

All four of the board’s Republicans voted for both Bowen and Hilliard, with Democrats Patrick Kelly, Pat McCracken and Lynn Smith casting votes for Kelly for both chairman and vice chairman. Kelly had served as chairman for the past two years despite Republican control of the board thanks to support from Republican Stephen Coble, who did not seek re-election in 2020. Hilliard had previously served as vice chair.
