An 18 year old was shot and killed at a graduation party in Sanford early Saturday, and a 16 year old suspect is in custody, police said.

Sanford police responded between midnight and 1 a.m. to the Baymont Hotel at 2614 S. Horner Blvd. and found Jason Lamont Harrington, 18, in the parking lot with gunshot wounds.

Harrington was taken to Central Carolina Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police said “a parent” had rented a room at the hotel for her son to have a graduation party, although there was no information provided regarding the identity of the parent or if the child in question was the victim, the suspect, or neither.

Around 7:20 a.m. on Saturday, police located a 16 year old suspect and charged him with juvenile petitions for murder and possession of a firearm by a minor. The suspect was taken to a juvenile detention center in Raleigh.

Police said the case remains under investigation. No other information was provided.
