FirstHealth Fitness in Sanford will host a 108 Sun Salutations yoga event on Saturday, Jan. 1 from 9 to 11 a.m. to celebrate the new year.
Led by yoga instructor Chris Davis, the 108 Sun Salutations event will take place at the Sanford fitness center at 2925 Beechtree Drive. It is free and open to all FirstHealth Fitness members and non-members. Hydrating refreshments will be provided, and event attendees will receive discounts on fitness memberships purchased that day.
The Sun Salutation is a sequence of yoga poses traditionally practiced to usher in a new day. Performing 108 Sun Salutations is an ancient ritual used to embrace changes of season and celebrate the new year or big life events. Participants can partake in all 108 sun salutations, commit to 54 or set their own goal.
Davis said it is believed the Sun Salutation practice is cleansing and detoxifying.
“Negative energy can get stuck in our bodies,” he said. “Practicing so many Sun Salutations in a row helps to move and release that energy and stuck emotions, as well as provide a sense of grounding. It leaves you feeling lighter and more energized, which is a great way to start the new year.”
Attendees are encouraged to bring their own yoga mats. Spaces are limited. To register, call (919) 258-2100.
