A suspect in the murder of his father was found dead by Lee County sheriff’s deputies on Wednesday.

Joseph Martin Kelly was wanted in connection with the Nov. 29 shooting death of his father, Randy Martin Kelly. He was found, according to deputies, in a wooded area on Buckhorn Road dead from a gunshot wound that appeared to be self inflicted.

Joseph Kelly was first listed as a “person of interest” on Nov. 30, and deputies announced they had a warrant for his arrest on Dec. 8.

The Lee County Sheriff’s Office was aided in the investigation by Lee County Emergency Services, Harnett County Emergency Services, the North Carolina Department of Public Safety, Pender County Search and Rescue, South Orange Rescue, Shallot’s Fire and Rescue, Brunswick County Search and Rescue, the Pocket Fire Department, the Carolina Trace Fire Department, the Deep River Fire Department, the Cape Fear Fire Department, the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office, the Harnett County Sheriff’s Office, Chocowinity County Search and Rescue, and the North Carolina Highway Patrol.
