Sanford police are investigating a Monday shooting that left a 72-year-old man dead and another man injured.

Officers responded to 218 Simmons St. around 2:25 p.m. Monday and found two men in the yard suffering from gunshot wounds. They were identified as 72-year old Joseph Thomas Smith and 19-year-old Ty’Shawn Anthony Smith, both of the residence.

Both men were taken to Central Carolina Hospital, where Joseph Smith was pronounced dead. Ty’Shawn Smith, who was shot in the leg, is in stable condition at the hospital.
