Four people filed for seats on the Sanford City Council in the Nov. 7 municipal election on the first day of filing Friday, according to Jane Rae Fawcett, Lee County director of elections. And after one day, it appears there will be a Democratic primary in the city’s Ward 4 election.
Incumbent Democrat Byron Buckels, who ran uncontested in 2019, will face challenger Tamekia Dowdy, a self-employed community activist, in the Ward 4 primary election on Sept. 12.
In Ward 2, Republican Charles Taylor will go for his fifth term and so far is the only candidate to file in his ward. Taylor, first elected to the Sanford City Council in 2007, defeated Democrat Brandon Atkins with 63 percent of the vote in 2019.
The only at-large candidate to file on Friday was Democrat Walter Ferguson, a financial advisor who ran unsuccessfully for the Lee County Board of Education last November, finishing sixth out of the six candidates in that election.
Elections will be held for four Sanford City Council seats (at-large, Ward 2, Ward 4 and Ward 5), the Town of Broadway mayor and two seats on the Broadway Town Commission. Primaries will be held on Sept. 12, a second primary (if needed) on Oct. 10 and the main election on Nov. 7.
No more Democrats.
Yes because the local Republicans have done so much good for our city. Please don’t confuse local and national politics.
You can tell “Just Saying” is a deep thinker. I bet his teachers loved his one sentence essays he wrote.
Quick, concise, and to the point. Nothing wrong with his vocabulary. And for the intellectuals on “The Rant”, you need to use small easy to understand words, Usually anything with more than three syllables gets lost in the comprehension phase.
Three whole sentences! Good deal! You are improving! See, I matched you. LOL.
Nice run on sentence, DGRB. Next time, end the sentence at essays.
I thought the whole point was grammar doesn’t matter. I guess you just don’t get it.
Well, I was taught by Democrat loving teachers.
If someone is going to vote for the weaker candidate or not vote at all in a local election just because of the political party of the candidates, shame on that person. Walter Ferguson, for example, is a life long resident of Sanford. He served in the US Army during Desert Storm. He has been a law enforcement officer. He is a Christian that attends church. He is a successful businessman and his wife is a successful small buisness owner. He has raised beautiful daughters that are successful, well educated, young ladies. If a person wouldn’t considered voting for Walter just because he has a D beside his name on the ballot it is truly sad.
Your argument is invalid.
There were millions of Nazis who were “life long resident(s)” of Germany, served in the German Army during WW1 and/or WW2, had “been a law enforcement officer, and were “a Christian that attend(ed) church.” They were “a successful businessman and (their wives) a successful small buisness owner.” They “raised beautiful daughters that (were) successful, well educated, young ladies.” If a person didn’t considered voting for them just because he had a N beside their name on the ballot, would you still say it is truly sad?
Really, is that the analogy you came up with? Come on. My argument is spot on. Walter is well qualified to be elected to city council. When he is making his case to the public do you not want to know his background? As a council member he will be making decisions on the city budget, police and fire department, zoning, tax incentives, etc. The more I think about it the more your analogy is just plain stupid. Walter is running as a DEM. “Just saying” says no more DEMS. Why is that? He likely thinks all DEMS are some type of socialist or better yet communist, if he knows the difference, that don’t believe in God, don’t believe in marriage, are baby killers, and just has a total different way of thinking as he. Since he is a DEM you could have at least came up with a good communist analogy since it is the republicans that more resemble the Nazis. My Gosh.
Logic – You got confused. The NAZI analogy is reserved for republicans. You can also use fascist for them. They are currently somewhere in the middle.
No party is a 100% right or wrong ! Partisan Politics why this country is in the shape it is . Nothing gets done, both parties are afraid the other will get credit for something . What a joke !
