Walter Ferguson, Charles Taylor, Tamekia Dowdy and Byron Buckels

Four people filed for seats on the Sanford City Council in the Nov. 7 municipal election on the first day of filing Friday, according to Jane Rae Fawcett, Lee County director of elections. And after one day, it appears there will be a Democratic primary in the city’s Ward 4 election.

Incumbent Democrat Byron Buckels, who ran uncontested in 2019, will face challenger Tamekia Dowdy, a self-employed community activist, in the Ward 4 primary election on Sept. 12.

In Ward 2, Republican Charles Taylor will go for his fifth term and so far is the only candidate to file in his ward. Taylor, first elected to the Sanford City Council in 2007, defeated Democrat Brandon Atkins with 63 percent of the vote in 2019.

The only at-large candidate to file on Friday was Democrat Walter Ferguson, a financial advisor who ran unsuccessfully for the Lee County Board of Education last November, finishing sixth out of the six candidates in that election.

Elections will be held for four Sanford City Council seats (at-large, Ward 2, Ward 4 and Ward 5), the Town of Broadway mayor and two seats on the Broadway Town Commission. Primaries will be held on Sept. 12, a second primary (if needed) on Oct. 10 and the main election on Nov. 7.
