A Del Taco restaurant has been proposed along South Horner Boulevard in Sanford, according to an agenda for the Sanford-Lee County Planning Department’s Technical Review Committee meeting on Feb. 29.
The 2,021 square foot restaurant would have a double drive-thru and be located at 3116 S. Horner Blvd. between the Modwash car wash and the strip mall that houses Jersey Mike’s, Sports Clips and the FirstHealth Convenient Care Clinic.
Del Taco is a California-based fast food chain which has existed since the 1960s, with most of its locations in California. Its website shows the only other location in North Carolina being a yet-to-open store in Durham, although Wikipedia suggests there was a location in Hickory in the late 80s or early 90s.
Other items on the TRC agenda include:
- The construction of a 27-townhome residential development at 4916 Palomino Drive to be known as Palomino Acres, and
- The addition of two modular classroom units and 35 parking spaces at Grace Christian School.
The Technical Review Committee is comprised of local officials from various city and county government entities representing Sanford, Lee County and Broadway. The committee meets monthly to review commercial projects and major subdivisions for compliance with the codes and policies of various local departments. Committee members make no guarantee that the projects submitted for review will be developed — only that they fall under compliance.

Grace keeps adding students, which in turn is MORE cars in and out of their bottleneck driveway and they have no concern for the added traffic and problems it causes the motoring public. They have 2 deputies out there doing the best they can, but it is too much traffic for that road and entrance to Grace. When will someone address the traffic concerns out there? If you have been through there between 7:20 and 8:00 in the mornings you know what I’m talking about.
Do you want Grace Christian to pay for a driveway connection or new street to Hickory House Road?
That’s part of the only way to address the problem. The City can not address it as a problem until it is in the City Limits or connected to City Sewer.
That means the roads are NC DOT issues.
Or maybe…they could stop the unsustainable growth? Start school at 730 to avoid regular commuter traffic? There are other options rather than just “pay for a new road”.
I remember a Dell Taco on 15-501 between Chapel Hill and Durham back in the 1980’s and it was great.
Please fact check me on that. I just remember going to a Duke basketball game and going to one in that area
William, you are so right about traffic in tramway, I live near tramway school , that is a nightmare with traffic in the & pm, center church rd needs to be widened with a lane just for school traffic , then you have new apts right there , we need another grocery store in the area , soon a new Sheetz will be on the corner , did I miss anything ?
What is really needed is the extension of US 1 as four lane limited access from Keller Andrews road to the US 1 and 15-501 intersection. The new four lane can only run to the east of the existing highway – this means a new road that approximates Brantly with Peach Orchard.
It’s a five mile new stretch to get it from just north of Tobacco Road to Keller’s rest home.
You will need an interchange at US 78 and either Willit or Bruce Coggins.
Everyone who owns commercial property that is bypassed will raise Hell.
DelTaco has closed most of its locations in California because of crime. Democrat run areas in Cali have seen many restaurants and businesses close because of democrat policies, you can bet on seeing more of this.
I was curious about this so I looked for any evidence that Del Taco has “closed most of its locations in California” for any reason, since California is where the majority of their stores are. The only news report about a Del Taco closing anywhere in the last year-plus that I could find came from Circleville, Ohio, population 13,927. Circleville appears to have a Republican mayor.
Fly to California and look with your own eyes, the crime and policies of the democrats have caused hundreds of businesses to close either from theft or lack of prosecutions from George Soros funded district attorneys.
Lies I live in sol cal & it’s a lot of del tacos locations still open . Cali do have dumb laws that allow people to steal $1000 and under worth of stuff without going to jail . But hell theft happens every where in the US
