Democrats Cameron Sharpe, Bob Joyce and Mark Lovick will advance to the general election for the Lee County Board of Commissioners, according to unofficial results released by the Lee County Board of Elections following the close of voting on Tuesday.
The three will face Republicans Samantha Martin, Bob Quilty and David Smoak in the general election for three at large seats on the board of commissioners in November.
Numbers released Tuesday night with 100 percent of Lee precincts reporting show Sharpe led Democrats with 2,444 votes (27.69 percwnt), while Joyce finished with 2,203 (24.96 percent) and Lovick earned 2,055 (23.28 percent). Fellow Democrats Kenneth Cole and Lloyd Smith each got 1,455 (16.48 percent) and 670 (7.59 percent), respectively.
Although both the Republican and Democratic primary ballots in Lee County featured multiple statewide races, the only other local primary voters had a say in was the Republican primary for North Carolina’s 13th Congressional District, which featured 14 Republicans vying for the party’s nod in the election for the Republican-leaning district.
The district includes all of Lee, Harnett, Johnston, Franklin, Person and Caswell counties, as well as portions of Wake and Granville counties.
District-wide, Kelly Daughtry led as of 9:40 p.m., with nearly 65 percent of precincts reporting, with 8,922 votes (25.04 percent) to Brad Knott’s 7,177 (20.14 percent), Fred Von Canon’s 6,701 (18.8 percent) and Devan Barbour’s 4,285 (12.02 percent). The early results signal the possibility of a runoff in the Congressional race, which requires at least 30 percent for an outright victory in a multi-candidate primary. The eventual nominee will face Democrat Frank Price in November.
The Rant will update numbers in the GOP Congressional primary on Wednesday, and include more details about Lee County’s role in statewide primaries, as more results are published. Results are not final until canvassed and certified by the state and local board of elections.

glad the rant is virtual again!
