A weeklong celebration of local agriculture will kick off Saturday with the opening of the Sanford Farmer’s Market from 8:30 a.m. to noon at 115 Chatham St. in downtown Sanford.

The market will be open Saturdays until Nov. 9.

But the market is just the start of Ag Week, which is celebrated every year by the North Carolina Cooperative Extension as a way to draw attention to the role agriculture plays in daily life.

After the market kicks off on Saturday, Ag Week continues Monday with “Green Thumbs Up,” a series of workshops on gardening, with topics including composting, microgreens and soil types. Green Thumbs Up runs from 4 to 6 p.m. on April 22 at the Lee County Cooperative Extension, 2420 Tramway Road.

On Tuesday, April 23 the Extension will host three more workshops – “Thrillers, Fillers, and Spillers,” a container design class running from 10 a.m. to noon ($25), “Preserve & Pass Down,” a pressure canning class, from 2 to 4 p.m. ($5), and “Gardening Off the Ground,” a class in raised bed gardening from 6 to 8 p.m. ($25).

On Thursday, April 25, the Extension will hold two pollinator open house events from 9 a.m. to noon and 2 to 5 p.m. The sessions are $10.

On Friday, April 26, the Extension will hold a second “Preserve & Pass Down” class, this one on boiling water canning. Cost is $5.

Ag Week ends with the second Sanford Farmer’s Market, again from 8:30 a.m. to noon at 115 Chatham St. There will be a backyard chickens Q&A session during the market.
