The Sanford Spinners topped the Sandhills (Pinehurst) Bogeys 10-1 Saturday in their 2024 season opener for the collegiate level Old North State League.
The game, played in Pinehurst, saw the Bogeys score their only run in the first inning. The Spinners responded with six runs in the second inning, two more in the fourth, and two more in the sixth.
The Spinners had offensive contributions from catcher Ashton Donathan (two hits and four RBIs,) designated hitter Coleman McGinnis (one hit and two RBIs), shortstop Cade Martinez (one RBI), and outfielder Abi Kadangot (two runs and one RBI). Starting pitcher Cranz Smelcer earned the win with four innings pitched, four strikeouts and one walk.
The Spinners play two games in Raleigh against the Oak City Gliders on Tuesday and Wednesday before their home opener against the Bogeys at Tramway Park adjacent to Southern Lee High School at 7 p.m. on Friday. The Spinners will host the Hope Mills Rockfish on Saturday.
