A group of 10-year-old boys have spent their summer in the sand — not building sandcastles, but building a winning team on the baseball field. And now they’re needing help to continue their summer success.

Each year, Deep River Northview Optimist Baseball pulls together 12 of the top 10-year-olds from the spring recreational season to create a team for the All-Star baseball tournament. Practicing three to four times a week, the team’s hard work paid off during their first stop in Swansboro June 28-30, where they scored 42 runs on 45 hits and gave up just nine hits total in their first four games before falling in the state championship game to New Bern, 7-4.

The second place finish, however, punched Lee County’s ticket to the Southeast Regionals beginning next week (July 17-21) in Alexandria, Va.

To help offset the cost of the trip, the team will hold a Carwash Fundraiser on Sunday (July 14) in the parking lot of Express Employment Professionals at 307 North Horner Boulevard in Sanford. The fundraiser will run from 1 to 4 p.m., and the team is asking for a $10 per washed car.

Those who want to contribute but can’t make it to the fundraiser can contact Mike Gaster at (919) 770-6529 or donate directly to the group’s GoFundMe page. Deep River Northview Optimist is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, so donations are tax deductible.
