The Sanford Spinners topped the Hope Mills Rockfish 11-2 on Tuesday, putting the team in first place for the second half of the collegiate level summer Old North State League’s Southeastern Division with a 4-2 record.
The Spinners got offensive contributions from catcher Ashton Donathan, who had two hits – including a grand slam – and five runs batted in. He also had a sacrifice fly that scored one run.
Third baseman Pierce Bouwman had a triple in the first inning which scored two runs, and utility player Logan Reddemann had an RBI single. Utility player DC Ruth also had an RBI single.
Starting pitcher Drew Landmark allowed one hit and two unearned runs in six innings. He had three strikeouts and a walk.
The 2024 Old North State League’s season is split into two halves, with the winner of each division for in June and July clinching a playoff spot (if the same team wins both months, the team with the next best record secures a playoff spot).
June was rough for the Spinners, who were 5-7 in the division, good for fourth place behind the Brunswick (Southport) Surfin’ Turfs (9-3), the Sandhills (Pinehurst) Bogeys (7-5) and the Rockfish (6-6). But July has been a different story, with the Spinners topping the Jacksonville Ospreys 9-8 on July 3, beating the Surfin’ Turfs 5-3 on July 11, and defeating the Bogeys 10-2 on July 14. The Spinners fell 4-2 to the Bogeys on July 2, and 5-4 to the Bogeys on July 15.
Seven games remain in the 2024 season. The Spinners are on the road against Jacksonville on Wednesday before a three game home stand at Tramway Park adjacent to Southern Lee High School beginning 7 p.m. Thursday against the Ospreys.
From there, the Spinners host Brunswick at 7 p.m. Saturday and the Oak City (Raleigh) Gliders at 7 p.m. Sunday in a non divisional matchup. The Spinners then have a road game against the Surfin’ Turfs on Monday, July 22 before the final two games of the season against Hope Mills on Tuesday, July 23 (the double header includes a game that was rescheduled due to rain on Tuesday night).
