Sanford police on Thursday arrested a North Carolina man who has apparently been linked to various extremist groups on charges of soliciting a minor for sex.
Boyd Dale Cathey, 76, of Wendell faces felony charges of attempted statutory sex offense on a child of 15 or younger and solicitation of a child by computer.
Detectives arrested Cathey around 10:20 a.m. Thursday following an “ongoing investigation” by the Sanford Police Department. According to the arrest report, Cathey was taken into custody in the Carthage Colonies subdivision.
The first result of a Google search of Cathey’s name is a profile on the website for the Southern Poverty Law Center, which among other initiatives tracks individuals involved with extremist groups. The profile lists Wendell as Cathey’s location, although it puts his birth year at 1950 instead of 1948, the year given by SPD.
“For three decades, radical right-wing activist and author Boyd Cathey has worked to bridge mainstream conservative politics and the far-right fringe worlds of Holocaust denial, extremist Catholicism, and racially tinged neo-Confederate causes,” reads the profile, which also notes that he served as “North Carolina co-chair for the presidential campaign of anti-gay televangelist … Pat Robertson,” and was “state campaign manager for Pat Buchanan’s presidential campaign” in 1992.
The profile also notes that Cathey had been linked to the Institute for Historical Review, which it described as “arguably the world’s leading Holocaust denial organization.”
More recently, Cathey appears to have maintained a blog covering a number of current political topics from what appears to be a far right perspective.
A Lee County magistrate ordered no bond for Cathey, and the Lee County Jail’s website showed him as an active inmate as of Thursday afternoon.
If he is guilty of the charges he certainly needs to be punished. But please don’t try to infer that we conservative citizens who love America, honor the American Flag , belief in God and obey the laws are far right extremist.
Is Cathey a typical conservative citizen? He’s a gutter racist, Holocaust denier and Confederate apologist.
I always find it funny that the more conservative or right a person claims to be, the more likely they are to be involved in the very things they preach against. Look at all the republican politicians who proclaim anti-gay rhetoric, only to be caught either in active homosexual activities or seeking them. Then you have the “Family values” crowd who cheat on spouses repeatedly. To be truthful, most conservative republicans have no problem voting for a person who commits some of the very type of actions they profess to be against. The same happens with the most vocal evangelicals. Preach against gays and end up getting caught with male prostitutes, or preach that sex belongs only between married couples, then get caught having affairs with parishioners or engaging a hooker. It’s so common that when someone tells me they are a conservative republican, I laugh inside while I wonder what their internet search history looks like. You know the more conservative they are, the freakier it will be.
you realize the exact same thing applies to the left, and the further to the left even more so….
Oh sure, the lefty’s do some as well. They cheat on spouses. Some have homosexual encounters too. These things are not politically exclusive, The difference is they don’t demonize people for personal choices. And if you look it up, you will find that yes, these scandals happen on both sides, but it happens with conservatives and evangelicals more often. It the hypocricy that is humorous.
The headline is backward. This is a sex offender who happens to be a far right extremist. Probably been a pervert all his life. Sickos tend to live hate filled lives. Give’s real conservatives a bad name….shameful.
It’s fact that the majority of sex offenders are lefties. Funny how they finally find one conservative and they make a point to print his political beliefs. Wonder who this website is in bed with?

Most of the folks posting knee jerk reactions can’t diagram a left-right spectrum on a single line let alone the three or four lines of cleavage it takes to actually place someone. Now personally I like it when the po po beats the hell out of a confirmed pedo. You have to expect to be hoist on your own petard when you trumpet that religiously conservative Republicans are the friends of children and Democrats are not.
I see that the man charged is listed as a far right activist and conservative. Are you going to list the political affiliations of all criminals from now on or just the conservative ones? Just wondering.
He seems to have special treatment because he was on a Southern Poverty Law Center list. If you are on their list and have been for over 30 years, you are likely one crazy dude. It puts you up there with Glen Miller, David Duke, and you don’t get on the list for being a good ole boy and calling President Obama a “n”. You get on the list by participating in ACTIONS that are fringe and actions that imply or threaten some form of politicized violence. Put another way, just because you get put in the stadium jail during a Philadelphia Eagles game or throw a beer can at an ECU football does not mean you are some sort of politicized creature that needs watching.
Yep the “slant” needs to make sure that they post the political affiliation of every criminal that they profile in the future. None of us will find those revelations surprising at all I assure you.
Keep in mine this man has not been found guilty of anything yet. And if he is found guilty what connection does that have to do with his political beliefs. I can only guess what RantNC’s political leanings are. Its pretty obvious.

Until he is proved guilty by a jury of his peers, we should be reluctant to find him guilty in the sphere of public opinion, regardless of his religious or political opinions since we only know what reporters say at this point.
