The Stepping Stones Children’s Center on Kelly Drive will close its doors in July, the organization has announced.
Parents with children at the center were alerted to the situation with a letter this week and “encouraged to begin exploring alternative child care arrangements.” The closure will be effective on July 21.
A press release from the center, overseen by the nonprofit Stevens Center which advocates for and provides services to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, said the decision “follows thoughtful planning and a renewed commitment to long-term community impact.”
“The Board and leadership are using this transition as an opportunity to take a fresh look at community needs and invest energy into designing services that are innovative, inclusive, and responsive to the evolving landscape of disability support,” the release said, adding that the center’s future “will focus on expanding impact and reimagining how best to support individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities in Lee County.”
Doesn’t sound like they have a plan – just a word salad.

We at Tippitoes Early Education Development Center are owner operated. We opened our center because of our dissatisfaction from childcare services, for children with special needs. After my husband and I adopted 4 special needs kiddos, we had a difficult time acquiring or keeping childcare; as a result Tippitoes was born in the heart of Sanford. It took us 4 years to develop our center from the ground up. It has been built with love. We had an open house on Saturday 4/26 with lots of fun to assist parents with any questions and transition assistance. Our mission is based with Christian.values to offer care to all children. 4 of our teachers are RBT trained with behavioral interventions training as well as contracting with outside therapists to provide care to our children at the center. Who allows someone to adopt 4 special needs children!? You clearly said it yourself that you weren’t prepared to address the need for extra supervision for them. SMH.
Clearly she stated that there is not enough resources within the community to assist families with childcare. They found a problem and are attempting to bridge the gap with a solution. The children they adopted were removed from the possibility of either being passed from home to home through the foster care system or placed in a group setting where their needs may not have been met on an individual basis. These children have been placed in a singular stable environment where they can be nurtured and attended to. It sounds like Ms. Tippit is trying to provide not only her adopted children the best opportunity that she can given the circumstances there are for resources in Lee County, but also other children who need behavioral assistance as well. Maybe instead of constantly judging and being a keyboard warrior behind a computer screen, you praise people for putting themselves out there to try and protect and better the future society of Lee County.
Your comment is so disheartening. For your information I was able to adopt 4 kiddos because they were an answer to a prayer that my husband and I prayed. Also, we were financially, emotionally stable enough to do so. In fact, we were able to come with a solution to a problem which existed; Sir, we are problem solvers. So much that we were able to purchase a property and create a Childcare center for ALL children and create community. You seem to be the resistance to change. As for our 4 children we Adopted, they have rapidly progressed towards normalicy 3/4 getting 80-90 grades in school as well, as assisting in the childcare center for daily operations after school. What my husband and I have learned is with consistency, firmness, love, attentiveness, prayer, disabilities can be turn into superpowers…My 4 adopted kiddos will inherit the property as well as the school which they are learning to operate from this young age. What we have done sir is create legacy and community, by the grace of Lord Jesus Christ. I pray 🙏 that God give you peace and a loving 🥰 heart . Follow the money trail my friend…you’d be surprised by the financial assistance you’d receive from this, not to mention at least 5 figures in tax returns.
Jesus Christ man not everything is about money. Some people act out of genuine kindness and outreach in their hearts and aren’t looking for ways to monetize their compassion for giving children homes when they’d be otherwise stuck in a system that isn’t designed to help them.
