Sanford police are investigating the embezzlement of nearly $30,000 from Southern Lee High School, according to an incident report.
The report, dated Monday, states that someone took $29,462.49 in “cash and illicit charges.” The funds were last known to be secure at 10:10 a.m. on Monday, the time of the report.
According to a Lee County Schools statement, district officials recently flagged “some potential irregularities in the activities of an individual at one of our schools” and that “the individual whose actions are under review is no longer employed” by LCS.
This is the second case of embezzlement at Lee County Schools in as many years. In March 2025, Sanford police arrested a former central office finance employee on charges of embezzling nearly $200,000. A trial in that case is scheduled for July.
The LCS statement said district leadership “have been strengthening internal controls and oversight measures” with regards to finance, and credited those guardrails with identifying the irregularities that led to the discovery of the missing money.

Mmm, time for an audit !
