Southern Lee High School’s baseball team captured the school’s first NCHSAA state championship Saturday night with a 12-2 win over South Caldwell in Burlington.
After falling behind 2-0 in the top of the first, Southern scored three of their own in the bottom half of that inning and never looked back, putting up 12 unanswered runs to end the game by mercy rule, 12-2. Rylan Stephens got the win from the mound.
Junior Drew Patton was named the final series MVP.
The Cavaliers won 7-2 on Friday night in Game 1 of the Championship series, but dropped a heartbreaker on a walkoff single in Game 2 earlier Saturday. They were a strike away from a win, but it slipped away.
Southern Lee finished the season with a 31-5 record.
