A clever marketing ploy? A trail left by a golden snail or a leprechaun leading to a pot of gold? A mistake?
Over the weekend a thin yellow line appeared in the southbound lane of U.S. 1 and then U.S. 15-501 through Sanford, and no one knows where it came from.
The line starts (or maybe ends) around the Wake-Chatham County line and extends all the way to the Sheetz in Carthage. It has been the subject of at least one viral TikTok post, and stirred questions all over town.
We checked in with N.C. Department of Transportation’s Division 8 to see if they had an explanation. Division Maintenance Engineer Matthew Kitchen said he didn’t have “a definitive answer.”
“From what we see it appears to have been a contractor paint truck that may have had a hole in one of their supply lines or simply someone with a paint can in the back of a truck that had a leak. The fact that it’s yellow, lends me to believe it was a paint truck, but that is pure speculation,” he said by email. “Not much that can be done to fix other than just let it fade away over time.”
Our suspicion is that some worker stopped in for some Shwings or Shnuggets and Curly Fryz, noticed the yellow paint dribbling from his truck, and realized he was in for a long day. If you know what happened, shoot us an email or leave a comment below.

It was not a straight line. The waves suggest whatever was leaking was swinging back and forth.
You know, I’ve seen this for several days now, I was wondering the same thing , surely someone knows !

The yellow line came from the paint truck that does the lines on the road when they were repaving down by the old truck stop I know this because I pick somebody up from the chicken plant every night and they were repaving this past week
I’ve seen these too, was wondering
I have video of it also. It also goes down 15/501. I have no idea what it is. But it goes on for a long while
the last time this happened, the yellow line left us-1 and went down moncure-pittsboro road and eventually down my concrete driveway as well as many other driveways in the area. a 5 gallon bucket of yellow paint destined for 3m had overturned inside a ups truck and was seeping out a small drain hole
All this time, I thought Dorothy and Toto were planning a trip.
