Lee County Animal Services requests the public’s participation in a short survey to guide strategic planning for future initiatives.

The survey isavailable online at https://forms.cloud.microsoft/g/PYkRrqGzXT and paper copies are available at the Lee County Government Center, located at 106 Hillcrest Drive on the second floor, and the Lee County Animal Shelter, located at 1450 N. Horner Boulevard.

Results will be collected for two weeks, with the survey closing on Nov. 4.

Lee County Animal Services announced in August it was going to improve the way it communicates with local animal rescue and foster groups (as well as the public) about availability and adoption options after several local groups raised concerns about the department’s staffing shortages and lack of resources.

The criticisms came after recent awards handed to Lee County Animal Shelter by the nonprofit group, Best Friends Animal Society, which tagged it as a “No-Kill Shelter” in 2023 and 2024, a signal that the shelter hit a 90-percent adoption rate for a calendar year. That number dropped to roughly 82 percent in 2025, with 1,222 animals adopted and rescued throughout the year. No numbers for 2026 have been publicly released.

William Cain, Lee County’s public health director, said that while the animal shelter does “tremendous work,” more can be done to improve the program.

“A great deal of feedback has been shared recently, and we have heard many of you,” he said. “This survey and the results will assist us in our strategic planning efforts to continue building our program.”
