It’s summer and it’s ‘Merica. And ‘Merica means burgers. So does summer.
So let’s quit the foreplay. Loosen your belt and go try these burgers … we deem them the “Best Burgers In and Around Sanford, North Carolina, USA.”
‘Merica.
SANFORD: Any burger made at The Steele Pig (133 S. Steele St. in downtown Sanford) is worth its weight in gold. But if you happen to be in when they’re doing a bacon, pimento cheese and onion string burger, then by golly drop everything and feast like a king.
SOUTHERN PINES: Hidden away at the Pine Needles Resort & Country Club is the Grande Bell Burger … a 16-ounce slab of beef with lettuce, tomato, three cheeses, onion rings and a roasted pepper … plus barbecue mayonnaise … on a toasted brioche bun.
SILER CITY: Johnson’s Drive-In is legendary for its simple, yet damned good burgers. Cheap (bring cash though), small and greasy, they’re the best diner burger in North Carolina. Get it all-the-way with chili and slaw. | Photo by Our State Magazine
PITTSBORO: Roadhouse Burger at Pittsboro Roadhouse. The photo doesn’t do it justice. So we’ll describe it — a grilled cheese sandwich with a tomato on top, burger patty, jalapeno bacon, lettuce, onion, pickle, garlic aioli … then more bacon, another burger and another grilled cheese sandwich with a tomato on the bookend. Come hungry.
I remember a cook out at Jon’s house. We brought cheese dip and guac from La ,and those on the burgers was so great.
La Cabana, that is.
