Three Wilmington men have been arrested, possibly in connection with the November 2013 robbery and murder of a Lee County man.
Information on file at the Lee County Clerk of Court’s office indicates that Harley Chavis, 20, Anthony Strickland, 21, and Rodney Mintz IV, 24, all of Wilmington, have each been charged with murder, armed robbery, and kidnapping.
Aside from the charges and the names of the new suspects, the only information listed about the case at the clerk’s office is the alleged date of offense – Nov. 22, 2013.
That’s the same date that Anthony Wayne Giles was killed by a man posing as a sheriff’s deputy in his home on Hickory Nut Court in southern Lee County. Two months later, the Lee County Sheriff’s Office arrested six people on various charges related to that murder.
It’s unclear what the charges against the three Wilmington men mean for the six who were arrested in January. Those six – Wilbert Bruton, Phillip Fortune, Akil McAden, Jessica McKoy, Franklin Dorsett, and Travis McLean – were charged with murder, burglary, kidnapping, possessing stolen goods, armed robbery, and conspiracy.
Lee County Jail staff indicated by phone Monday that Fortune, McAden, McKoy, and Dorsett are no longer in custody in Lee County, although it was unknown whether they’d posted bail, were being held elsewhere, or had been released for another reason. Bruton and McLean were still in custody in Lee County Monday.
Bruton was the subject of the very first Rant piece in January 2014. He was interviewed as a “friend of the victim” by WRAL the day after the murder.
