WWGP Radio’s Margaret Murchison reports that Butch Johnson, a retired Lee County magistrate who ran for sheriff in 2006 and for county commissioner in 2010, has been killed in a car wreck in Myrtle Beach.
Johnson sought the Democratic nomination for Lee County sheriff in 2006, but was defeated in the primary. He announced another run for the 2010 cycle, but later backed off, even appearing later in the cycle in ads alongside Sheriff Tracy Carter.
Later the same year, he was selected by the Lee County Democratic Party to run for Lee County Commissioner in District 2 after candidate Kenny Cole withdrew from the race. He was defeated by Jim Womack.
The Rant offers condolences to Johnson’s family.
