Longtime Lee County head baseball coach Charlie Spivey, one of the most accomplished high school baseball coaches in the state, has retired.
According to a story in the News & Observer this morning (no subscription required), Spivey told Lee County’s administration in October but, as he said in the story, “didn’t want to make a big deal of it.”
A big deal should probably have been made, though. Spivey led the Yellow Jackets to two 4-A state championships – in 1996 and 2001 – during a spectacular 32-year career. A former player at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, several of his players have gone on to excel at the collegiate and professional levels. His coaching tree is also extensive, including UNC pitching coach Scott Forbes and Southern Lee High School head coach David Miller among his former players.
Jevon Wade will coach the Yellow Jackets this season.
From the looks of it, Spivey is already enjoying some time off.
