Three Sanford Police officers have been placed on administrative leave after killing a man who fired at them with a handgun Tuesday night.

The officers responded to a disturbance at 414 Goldsboro Ave. (three blocks behind the Bojangles on Horner Boulevard, near Rose Street) around 11:20 p.m., according to a press release from Capt. Vinnie Frazer. According to the report, the officers found Juan Carlos Romero, 41, armed with a handgun at the scene. He reportedly fired at the three officers, who returned fire and killed Romero.

According to the report, the officers then discovered that Romero had shot a 19-year-old woman at the home on Goldsboro Avenue. The woman was taken to Central Carolina Hospital and later transferred to UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill, where he is currently listed in stable condition.

Administrative leave is standard procedure for officers involved in a shooting while the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigations investigates the incident. The names of the officers have not been released.
