North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper will rally Democratic volunteers in Sanford on Sunday afternoon, the Rant has learned.

A text message from the state Democratic Party went out to potential volunteers on Friday letting them know that the governor would be at the Lee County Democratic Party’s Headquarters in Sanford to greet canvassers from the Lisa Mathis campaign who will be working to turn out votes for Democratic candidates.

The canvassers will be working as voters in Lee County have the opportunity to vote on a Sunday for the first time ever. The Lee County Board of Elections decided in July to offer Sunday voting at the county’s two early vote sites – the elections office at 225 S. Steele St. and the McSwain Extension Center at 2420 Tramway Road – from 1 to 5 p.m.

Cooper has been a promoter of the state party’s “Break the Majority” initiative, which aims to elect enough Democrats to the state House and Senate to eliminate the supermajorities Republicans have held in both chambers for much of the decade.
