Former Sanford City Councilman Leopold “Poly” Cohen has died, according to an online obituary from Rogers Pickard Funeral Home in Sanford. He was 83.
Cohen was elected to the city council in 2009 and served one term. He is also known for founding Lee Iron and Metal in 1975, which still operates on South Horner Boulevard in Sanford. From the obituary:
Mr. Cohen was born in Augusta, Ga., son of the late Heline Schneider Cohen Sisken and Leopold Ira Cohen. He was preceded in death by his wife Sara S. “Sissy” Cohen.
Poly was the founder of Lee Iron and Metal Cmpanyo, a graduate of the University of Georgia, a former member of the Sanford City Council, a member of the Sanford Rotary Club, and a longtime dedicated member of the scrap metal recycling industry.
