Sanford Fire Department and a hazmat crew from Fayetteville responded today to a possible chemical exposure at Kiwanis Park near the splash pad.

According to a release from the City of Sanford, “during routine maintenance on the Kiwanis Family Park Splash Pad a contractor erroneously mixed two chemicals, causing a reaction that emitted toxic fumes.

“The N.C. Hazardous Materials Regional Response Team, which is based in Fayetteville, is on site to manage the mixed chemicals and ensure the environment is safe for employees and the public.

The Sanford Fire Department, Lee County Emergency Management, and Central Carolina Advanced Life Support are also on the scene.

Access to the Kiwanis Family Park trails and the Endor Iron Furnace Greenway is closed for the remainder of the day.”

The park’s playground and general areas have been closed since March 20 due to coronavirus (COVID-19). Only the trails have remained open.
