Lee County sheriff’s deputies have charged a Sanford man with animal cruelty after locating 28 dogs at his home.

Robert Joseph Lee, 59, of 2213 Carthage St. faces nine misdemeanor counts of animal cruelty.

Deputies with the department’s animal control unit responded around 8:35 a.m. Wednesday to 2215 Carthage St. in response to a call about stray dogs in the area and determined that they were coming from Lee’s house next door. While attempting to make contact with Lee, officials “observed several canines on the property housed in an improper manner,” according to a press release. Further details were not disclosed.

After obtaining a warrant, deputies discovered and seized a total of 28 dogs from the property.

Information about the condition and type of dogs was not included in the press release, and it wasn’t immediately clear where the dogs were taken. The Rant will update this post if and when that information is released.

Lee was placed in the Lee County Jail under $5,000 secured bond.
