Lee County sheriff’s deputies have charged a Sanford man with animal cruelty after locating 28 dogs at his home.
Robert Joseph Lee, 59, of 2213 Carthage St. faces nine misdemeanor counts of animal cruelty.
Deputies with the department’s animal control unit responded around 8:35 a.m. Wednesday to 2215 Carthage St. in response to a call about stray dogs in the area and determined that they were coming from Lee’s house next door. While attempting to make contact with Lee, officials “observed several canines on the property housed in an improper manner,” according to a press release. Further details were not disclosed.
After obtaining a warrant, deputies discovered and seized a total of 28 dogs from the property.
Information about the condition and type of dogs was not included in the press release, and it wasn’t immediately clear where the dogs were taken. The Rant will update this post if and when that information is released.
Lee was placed in the Lee County Jail under $5,000 secured bond.
This is the worse case of injustice I have ever seen! I have known this man for many years and have visited him and his dogs. Robert has rescued each of these dogs from the streets, out of water in street drains, asked individuals that he witnessed beating their dogs if he could have them. Last November he found a puppy that had been thrown in a dumpster behind a supermarket. The puppy was in unbelievable condition, and without a 2nd thought he jumped in the trash to save the nearly dead puppy that was covered in trash and dumped grease from the deli. Robert named the puppy “Precious” and sent regular pictures of her recovery in his care. Precious went from near death to a happy, healthy puppy. Roberts oldest dog, Piggy was over 17 years old when she was taken from him this month and that girl along with each of the the dogs was his pride and joy in life. Robert purchased over $200.00 a week in dog food from a local feed store (the owners/managers/employees all know him by name. Robert made sure the dogs were fed, had water twice a day and spent every penny he earned on the health and wellbeing on his furry children. The “report” made on the date outlined in this report was made by his neighbor and she knew that the dogs were not “strays” but belonged to him. The same lady has called over 100 times in the past several years and each time the workers have come out to investigate they have found, yes LOTS of dog but all taken care of and loved. Robert cared for each dog daily, took them each out to play twice a day and called each of them by their name. They each knew their name and would come, running and happy every time he called. Robert is an upstanding citizen that fought many many years for the freedom we all enjoy daily in America. Not only was this incident completely injustice to him but also to each of dogs that found love in their hearts for a human and trusted him despite what their prior life experiences had been. I am discussed and in complete unbelief at the way these dogs were noosed and drug by their necks when they were taken away, even after Robert begged that he carry each of them to the vehicle. Robert is an upstanding citizen, kind, and gives his pension to charities… Maybe is he wasn’t so big hearted he would have the financial ability to own lots of land, a barn and a large fenced yard for his “children” to run and play. Robert has cared, loved and saved the life of many humans and furry ones. I am discussed that he has lots his reasons for living his life to the fullest daily. Shame on you each that have judged him, spoke, wrote, reported definition of his character and flat out LIED in reports to take his dogs and convicted him! You each are by far less of human beings than this man could ever be (even if he made that his life goal) and I hope you each will fight back, help overturn these awful systems and see the truth!!!!!
You need to share this more…glad I saw this by accident.
This family’s is good people and have a chance to meet there Mother when she is alive. That’s before I was living in Sanford.Mr. Robert’s Lee just wanted to help this stray animal and instead to place a charges the County should help them.It is sad.
How is it better that these dogs are being put down in less then 48 hours rather than being happy at home with a man that LOVES THEM!!!!
People need to know before they make a judgement.
