Candidate Donny Hunter withdrew his name on Wednesday from the 2021 ballot for the town of Broadway’s municipal election, leaving the race essentially uncontested.
Hunter, an education consultant and former superintendent of Lee County Schools, said in a written statement that he was withdrawing from the race “due to an unexpected opportunity” for his consulting company, National Search and Education Consulting.
“I have lived in Broadway all my life and I will continue to help Broadway in any way that I can,” he also wrote.
Hunter was one of four candidates to file for three seats on the town board, which is nonpartisan. Incumbents Tommy Beal and James Paschal, and newcomer April Collins also filed. The top three vote getters in the race are elected, essentially assuring victory for the three candidates still in the race.
Meanwhile, Sanford’s municipal election for 2021 has been moved to next spring due to a delay by the federal government in reporting Census data.
