Lee County Government, through the Lee County Enrichment Center, is now offering a program assisting taxpayers, primarily over 50 and with low to moderate income, with free help preparing their taxes.
AARP Tax-Aide will be available to help begin tax preparation beginning on Feb. 1.
Appointments will be available at the Lee County Enrichment Center on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday afternoons. Those interested in participating should call the Enrichment Center at (919) 776-0501 to schedule a time to pick up pre-appointment documents and then schedule a time for the tax preparation meeting.
Tax preparation will be done at the Enrichment Center, but due to COVID-19, clients will be asked to wait in their car while their return is being prepared.
There are several sections of The American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 that will affect tax returns for 2021. To address these changes the IRS is sending two new letters to taxpayers that should be received by mid-February. It’s very important that taxpayers bring these to the site when they come to have their taxes prepared:
•Letter 6475: “Your 2021 Economic Impact Payments” which will be sent beginning in late January. (all taxpayers)
•Letter 6419: “2021 Total Advance Child Tax Credit (AdvCTC) Payments” (all taxpayers who have children and/or who received advance payments of the Child Tax Credit)
