East Lee Middle School Principal Robert Newby appeared on CBS’ “The Price is Right” Tuesday, winning a total of more than $62,000 in prizes.

Newby, who is also Lee County’s current Principal of the Year, was the first contestant called on Tuesday’s episode, appearing roughly 13 seconds into the broadcast. Newby went on to win the episode’s second challenge, when he guessed $1,300 for an Apple computer which cost $1,699.

Newby then took the stage with host Drew Carey – wearing a shirt reading “move over James and Devin, The Price is Right has a new male model” on the front and “I’ve waited all my life to come on down” on the back, and exclaiming “oh my god, I can’t believe this Drew!” – to play “the Clock Game,” in which he had to guess the price of a vacuum set and dishwasher set as a clock ticked down from 30 seconds. Newby got the price of the vacuum set ($766) within about 10 seconds, and the cost of the dishwasher set ($979) in another 10 seconds. As a bonus for winning the game, Newby won a trip to Montenegro.

When Newby’s turn came to spin the wheel, he acknowledged his hometown, saying “I’d like to say hi to my family in North Carolina, say hi to my church family. I’d like to say hi to my middle school students and staff in Sanford, North Carolina.”

For the uninitiated, the goal of the spin the wheel segment is to earn a total of $1 or less – Newby got to 75 cents, while one of his opponents only got 35 cents and the other got $1.05.

Newby then moved on the the show’s final round, the Showcase Showdown. Newby and his opponent were first shown a prize package which included a home bar with a dance floor, a trip to Aruba, and a boat. Newby passed on that package, which his opponent guessed was worth $30,000.

Newby was then shown a package that included a six night, all inclusive stay in Cancun, Mexico, a home pizza oven, and a new Chevrolet Trax SUV. Newby guessed that package was worth $35,115.

Newby’s guess was $6,213 less than the total price of $41,328, while his opponent’s guess on his prize was $9,296 lower than the total value of $39,296, making Newby the winner.

Newby said the segment was filmed in March, during his Spring Break.

“I had originally made plans to go to Atlanta for Spring Break, but I’d always wanted to see a taping of The Price is Right,” he said when contacted Wednesday. “I found out they were having a taping during spring break so I changed my plans and went to California.”

Newby said he was shocked to hear his name called at all, much less first.

“What you didn’t see was I kept pinching myself to make sure it was real,” he said.

Asked about his skill at the Clock Game, Newby acknowledged watching the show since he was a child and said he’s gotten a lot of practice at home over the years.

“I can tell you every game they do on The Price is Right, just from where and how they set it up,” he said. “The Clock Game is easy for me.”

Newby had to keep his victory under wraps until the episode aired on Tuesday, which he said was difficult due to his excitement.

“People have been asking me and I told them ‘you just have to watch on May 21,'” he said. “I had to watch what I said really carefully, because if I said anything I could have lost everything I won.”

He said his favorite reaction to Tuesday’s airing came from his students.

“The kids were saying ‘Mr. Newby put the little town of Sanford on the map,'” he said. “My goal when I got up there was to win my game and spin the wheel. I never thought it would go any further that. But fate and God had a different idea.”
