Sanford native and UNC Head Baseball Scott Forbes has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference’s Coach of the Year.

Forbes was named the Tar Heels’ head coach in 2020, and had previously served as the team’s pitching coach and associate head coach. The 2024 season was the team’s best since 2017, according to an article about the award from Inside Carolina:

Forbes became a first-time winner of the award after guiding Carolina to the top of the conference in a number of categories in ACC league play, including wins (22), triples (10), home runs (68), slugging percentage (.560) and earned-run average (4.19).

UNC finished the regular season with its highest victory total in seven years, since the 2017 season, and enters the postseason with the best RPI data in the ACC, ahead of other conference foes Clemson, Florida State, Wake Forest, Virginia and NC State, all of whom are rated among the top 15. The Tar Heels rank fourth nationally in RPI behind only Texas A&M, Arkansas and Kentucky.

“I’m more determined now than ever (to make sure) that when they’re here, their experience is going to be great,” Forbes told Inside Carolina last week. “Can’t play everybody all the time. You’re going to play nine, you’re going to pitch one at a time. But their experience can still be a great every-day experience at North Carolina.”

The Inside Carolina story also notes that Forbes was named National Pitching Coach of the Year in 2008.
