Sanford’s mural collection continues to spread – this time beyond the boundaries of the downtown historic district. Sanford is well known for its various murals depicting historical figures from the community and other cultural attractions. Now, a new mural gives artistic expression to the more organic side of Lee County.
On the front facing wall of the Hawkins Run Apartments, near the intersection of Hawkins Avenue and McNeill Road, is a new mural dedicated to the natural beauty and wildlife in the Sanford area. The mural features plants, flowers, and animals that highlight the various natural wonders of the Lee County area. In addition, the mural also highlights the city designation as a Bee City USA, which was given in in 2023.
For Scott Nurkin, mural painting is a work of love. Since 2003, Nurkin has been the owner of the Mural Shop in Chapel Hill, and has been commissioned throughout the state to paint works of art of various public buildings and community centers. He began his work in Sanford with the mural of the Sanford Spinners in 2015 and has since contributed to several murals throughout the city.
Liz Whitmore, the Historic Preservation Planner for Sanford, is thrilled that yet another public art installation is being painted for the community to enjoy.
“The city’s intent is to spread out the murals beyond downtown to help showcase the many beautiful aspects and contributions that Sanford’s citizens have given and to highlight the great natural wonders our area has to offer,” she said.

Preston Communities Inc., which owns Hawkins Walk, approached Whitmore saying they wanted public art at their complex. The front building was designed with housing a work of public art – it was constructed with hardy plank instead of siding. After a careful review process from various committees, the project was approved and Nurkin was asked once again to paint a beautiful mural for another building in Sanford.
For Nurkin, the ability to capture both the Bee City USA and the more scenic side of Sanford was important. He said he’s taken great pleasure in painting the numerous animals and plants that cover the apartment side with a lush and vibrant array of creatures as well as flowers.
“I love focusing on species native to the area which highlight the natural beauty of the community,” he said.
The mural will be finished by the end of June.

Such A BEAUTIFUL mural!!! Thank you LIZ!!!
