Following a vote to expand the city’s Alcoholic Beverage Control Board from three members to five, Sanford City Councilman Charles Taylor has been removed as the council’s liaison to the board.
Taylor, who represents a ward covering the northern portion of the city limits, had opposed the expansion when it was floated at a council workshop in early June. Taylor at the time told Councilman Walter Ferguson – who made the proposal – that he should have spoken about it with Taylor first because he was the liaison.
A week later when the council voted on the issue, Taylor didn’t make any comments. He and Councilwoman Jean Dabbs were the only votes against expansion. The vote added radio personality Margaret Murchison, Sanford attorney and former City Councilman Chas Post, and Southern Lee High School faculty member Jan Tart to the ABC Board, which oversees the state’s ABC system locally.
Sanford Mayor Rebecca Wyhof Salmon told The Rant Tuesday that she made the decision to replace Taylor as liaison with Councilman Mark Akinosho “to ensure a smooth, productive start to the new board.”
Council liaisons to local boards and commissions are at the mayor’s discretion.
“Really the primary role of a liaison is to provide a communications link back to the council,” she said.
